On the morning of June 22, 1863, advanced units of Confederate Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell’s Corps crossed the Maryland border into Pennsylvania along what is today U.S. Route 11. Company I of the 14th Virginia Cavalry, part of Jenkins’ Brigade, encountered Company C of the 1st New York Cavalry north of Greencastle, Pennsylvania. The Union cavaliers pursued what they thought were retreating rebels, but they had been drawn into an ambush. Cpl. William Rihl was killed and Sgt. Milton Cafferty wounded, but the rest escaped. Rihl had the unenviable distinction of being the first Union soldier killed in action north of the Mason-Dixon Line.
