As Maj. Gen. Jubal Early’s division swept through Winchester, Virginia in pursuit of Union Maj. Gen. Robert H. Milroy’s fleeing troops, Maj. Gen. Edward Johnson’s division arrived at Stevenson’s Depot northeast of town, effectively cutting off Milroy’s retreat. Milroy’s men had no choice but to attack the Confederates, who were well-positioned in a railroad cut. A single Confederate artillery piece stationed on a bridge blunted Milroy’s advance, and reinforcements effectively sealed the trap. Around 4,000 Union soldiers were taken prisoner, alongside a cornucopia of supplies.
