The Virginia Washington Monument, on the public square in Richmond, Virginia, was designed by Thomas Crawford and built in stages between 1850 and 1869. Randolph Rogers completed the monument after Crawford’s death. The equestrian statue of George Washington stands 60 feet in the air and weighs 9 tons. Beneath Washington are bronze statues of Andrew Lewis, Patrick Henry, George Mason, Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, and Thomas Nelson, all prominent Revolutionary War figures from Virginia. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
