Sgt. Richard Rowland Kirkland, also known as “The Angel of Marye’s Heights”, belonged to the 2nd South Carolina Regiment. On the chilly afternoon of December 14th, During the Battle of Fredericksburg, Kirkland could no longer stand listening to the cries of the wounded of both sides trapped between the lines. At great personal risk, he filled canteens with water and ventured out alone to give water and blankets to the wounded. Artist Felix de Weldon created this bronze sculpture in 1965.
