While the 35th Virginia Cavalry Battalion participated in the Battle of Brandy Station in early June, it did not join Confederate cavalry commander JEB Stuart’s ride around the Union army. Instead, it was assigned to Lt. Gen. Richard Ewell’s corps and rode in advance of the infantry, disrupting Union scouts and supplies. On June 26, 1863, it routed Pennsylvania militia north of Gettysburg, and the next day rode east through Hanover to the small town of Jefferson in York County, Pennsylvania. In Jefferson, the 35th Virginia Cavalry, also known as “White’s Battalion”, stole horses and raided the town for supplies. After a brief excursion to Hanover Junction, they returned to burn several railroad cars, loot a store, and appropriate two barrels of whiskey.
