On the afternoon of June 24, 1863, Confederate Brig. Gen. Albert Jenkins rode into Shippensburg, Pennsylvania with his brigade in advance of the infantry, briefly clashing with the 1st New York Cavalry. When word reached the townsfolk that the Confederates were on their way, the proprietor of the Union Hotel hastily hired someone to paint “Sherman House” over their sign. Brig. Gen. Jenkins established his headquarters in town and his men set about seizing supplies. Rather than surrender a ransom, the townsfolk baked pies, cakes, and bread for the soldiers, and brought wagonloads of hay for their horses.
